(Tom McCarthy, US 2015, 129 min., DCP)
The controversial story of the Boston Archidocese’s cover-up of their priests’ criminality and the Boston Globe’s expose gets the Oscar-worthy treatment in this all-star drama. Robby Robinson (Michael Keaton) heads the “Spotlight” team at the Globe, a small group of investigative journalists that take months to research and publish. New editor Marty Baron (Liev Schreiber) encourages Robby to look into the Catholic Church and how much it knew about systemic abuses by priests. Encountering resistance from both the church and the lawyers who seem to be making money from out-of-court settlements, the team pushes past the legal system and their own emotional investment to bring the truth to light. Earning two Academy Awards, including Best Picture, the cast also includes Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, John Slattery, Stanley Tucci, and Billy Crudup.
