This was one of the first instances of what would later prove a winning formula for Disney: take a well-known fable, fairy tale, or story (in this case the legend of King Arthur) and treat it with ample modern touches to appeal to the funny bone. Arthur is portrayed as a contemporary youth, and the antics of Merlin, who undertakes to train the lad to become King, are by turns hilariously funny in his absent-mindedness and cunning in a battle of the sorcerers.
