(William K. Howard, US 1931, 78 min., 35mm)
This “aquatic Grand Hotel,” according to Variety, traps a disparate group of the upper class on a cross-ocean voyage on the S.S. Transatlantic. Rudolph Kramer (Jean Hersholt) is finally taking his daughter, Judy (Lois Moran) on a trip he’s been saving all his life for. They’re traveling with Kramer’s business partner Henry Graham (John Halliday) and his wife, Kay (Myrna Loy). When bad financial news arrives and a murder occurs, it’s up to Judy and her newfound friend Monty (Edmund Lowe) to discover what happened. James Wong Howe’s stunning visuals add depth to the proceedings.
