(Laslo Benedek, US 1953, 79 min., 35mm)

The Wild One established Marlon Brando as an archetypal antihero. Riding his own hog in the mother of all motorcycle flicks, Brando and his gang terrorize a California town while banging heads with Lee Marvin’s pack of punk bikers. Based on actual events, it opens with the disclaimer, “This is a shocking story… it is a public challenge not to let it happen again.” Producer Stanley Kramer hired real biker gangs to play themselves. When Kramer asked one of them what they were rebelling against, one member said, “Well, what have you got?” which became one of the film’s most iconic lines.
