A Woman of Affairs

Tuesday, June 14, 2022, 7:30 p.m., Dryden Theatre

(Clarence Brown, US 1928, 98 min., 35mm)

Based on Michael Arlen’s 1924 best-selling novel The Green Hat, A Woman of Affairs, the film follows childhood friends Diana Merrick (Greta Garbo), Neville (John Gilbert), and David (Johnny Mack Brown), as they rise through the ranks of the British aristocracy. Diana and Neville are in love, but his father opposes the match, disapproving of the Merrick Family’s lifestyle. Neville is sent to Egypt for business purposes, which puts a strain on the relationship. The film had to break all connections from the book—considered too daring in the United States for 1925—including changing the name of the film and renaming all the characters.
