(Ava DuVernay, US 2018, 109 min., DCP)
Based on Madeleine L’Engle’s groundbreaking novel, the film follows young Meg Murry as she travels space and time to rescue her missing father. Four years after the disappearance of her father, Meg (Storm Reid) and her brother, Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe), meet three mysterious women, the Misses. Whatsit, Who, and Which, who claim to know where their father is and how to retrieve him. Transporting from planet to planet, the group go on an adventure that will stretch their imagination and test Meg’s self-acceptance. Director Ava DuVernay used the clout she earned from her work on Selma to helm this fantasy adventure budgeted at over $100 million dollars, becoming the first Black woman to do so, and cast Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Meg’s mother.
