(John Cromwell, US 1944, 177 min., 35mm nitrate)
David O. Selznick's epic-length follow-up to Gone With the Wind and Rebecca was produced at the height of WWII. Claudette Colbert's comfortable life is upset when her advertising executive husband enlists in the service and sets off to war. To make ends meet on a soldier's pay, Colbert takes on boarders while raising her two dutiful daughters (Jennifer Jones and a teenage Shirley Temple). The eclectic cast also includes Joseph Cotten, Agnes Moorehead and Hattie McDaniel. Predating the similarly themed The Human Comedy and The Best Years of Our Lives, this film is criminally under-seen, despite having been nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and three for acting.
