Silver Bromide Enlarging Paper

Wednesday, November 11, 2015, 12 a.m., George Eastman Museum

Make your own enlarging paper! This special workshop is specifically for making, coating, and processing an enlarging speed silver bromide emulsion. Participants will be guided by Mark Osterman and Nick Brandreth to make this fast emulsion specifically for paper enlargements. This emulsion will then be coated onto simple Bristol board paper and photographic-grade baryta paper to make developed-out prints.

This workshop also includes a visit to the Eastman House Department of Photography to view vintage silver gelatin prints made by Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, Ansel Adams, and many more.

Note: This emulsion is different from the AZO or “gaslight” silver chloride emulsion for paper that we offer in another workshop. Azo papers are not designed for enlargement and must be contact printed.

Audience: Limited to six, this three-day workshop is for anyone who wants the freedom to make their own twentieth-century-style photographic printing paper that can be used with plate, film, or digital negatives. No experience is necessary.

Tuition: $500/$475 members, plus $90 materials fee.

Cancellation Policy: Withdrawal from the workshop 30 days before the session start date will receive a refund, minus a $100 processing fee. No refunds will be given for cancellations made less than 30 days before a workshop start date. If the workshop is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class will be fully refunded. George Eastman House is not responsible for airline ticket cancellation costs or fees. Eastman House may take and use images, still or video, for educational and promotional purposes.

Location and Scheduling: Daily sessions begin at 9 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. Unless otherwise stated, the workshops are held at George Eastman House in Rochester, New York. Directions can be found here.

Lodging: Lodging is not included in the cost of the workshop. Participants must make their own arrangements.
