Rediscovering Frederick Douglass

Monday, April 18, 2016, 6:30 p.m., George Eastman Museum

Join us for a FREE screening of Rediscovering Frederick Douglass, a new film that tells the story of how a previously undocumented photograph of famed abolitionist and human rights leader Frederick Douglass was rediscovered. The 30-minute documentary investigates the mystery surrounding this unique image, reveals details about the interesting life of the owner of the photograph, and explores ways Douglass used photography as a tool in the fight for social reform.

After the film, photography curators Heather Shannon and Jamie Allen and technology curator Todd Gustavson will discuss how the photograph was created and preserved. Following the discussion, the found photograph will be on display in the museum's Potter Peristyle, and guests will be able to explore the museum's current exhibitions, including A History of Photography: Exploring Black History and Culture

Organized by the City of Rochester in collaboration with the George Eastman Museum. For more information, visit cityofrochester.gov/FrederickDouglass.
