The presence of music in the cinema-going experience has been integral from the beginning, but it can often be overlooked when we are talking about film. Corresponding with our film series "The Art of Music in the Movies," this discussion will act as a primer for the subjects we'll talk about: What is the history of movie music? How does the process of writing music for film work? How has it evolved over time? What can instrumentation and arrangement tell us about what we're seeing on screen? How does music work on an audience to create an affect? Curator of Film Exhibitions Jared Case will be joined by Professor Emeritus of Media and Society Lester Friedman and Professor of Music Charity Lofthouse, both from Hobart and William Smith Colleges, to talk about all of these issues and prepare you for the film series.
The Art of Music in the Movies is supported by the Rodney Hatch Family Fund at Rochester Area Community Foundation.
