Not all rare prints are nitrate! There are many prints in our collection that derive directly from the original printing negative, one generation away from the stock that was in the camera at the time it was captured. These prints tend to have higher sharpness, density, and clarity as opposed to prints that have been made through the typical preservation process that includes duplicate negatives. Senior Curator Peter Bagrov and Head of Preservation Anthony L'Abbate join Curator of Film Exhibitions Jared Case to talk about these extraordinary prints and kick off a film series dedicated to them.
Over a professional life spanning seven decades, Edward Steichen (1879–1973) established himself as one of the most important figures in the history of photography. What is less known is that for much of that time, Steichen devoted himself to the nurturing of plants and gardens, an activity that sustained him and through which he developed ardently held beliefs regarding the relationship of art, nature, and creativity.
