Thursday, September 7, 2023, 7:30 p.m., Dryden Theatre

(Irving Rapper, US 1946, 115 min., 35mm)

Music Teacher Christine (Bette Davis) fell in love with Cellist Karel (Paul Henreid) during the war, but assumed he had died in the conflict. When he returns to a surprised Christine, they renew their love and plan to marry. Composer Alexander (Claude Rains), with whom Christine had a relationship after the war, offers Karel the chance to premiere his new concerto, but may have other plans in store. Combining old and new, Korngold tells the story of the modern music world through his compositions. Erich Korngold composed music for this film, interpolating music by Wagner, Beethoven, Schubert, and Haydn.

Introduction by and post-screening Q&A with Mark Watters, director of the Beal Institute at the Eastman School of Music
