(Steven Spielberg, US 1982, 115 min., DCP)
This 40th anniversary screening of Steven Spielberg’s most successful film is enhanced by the expertise of Lester Friedman, author of Citizen Spielberg, and Charity Lofthouse, professor of music at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. After the screening, the two will talk about the iconic film and its equally iconic John Williams score.
Continuing to look at the American family through genre film that he began in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Spielberg trains his lens on the single-parent family of Mary (Dee Wallace Stone) and her three children: Elliott (Henry Thomas), Gertie (Drew Barrymore), and Michael (Robert MacNaughton). Their lives are in disarray until a benevolent alien is left behind on Earth and takes up residence in their house. Through E.T.’s influence, the family will learn how to grow beyond themselves and focus on what is important in life.
Introduction by Lester D. Friedman, author of Citizen Spielberg. After the screening, Friedman and Charity Lofthouse, professor of music at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, will talk about the film and its equally iconic John Williams score.
