Photographer and author Penny Wolin spent eight years traveling throughout the United States photographing and interviewing more than seventy American Jewish photographers. The Eastman Museum is proud to welcome Wolin to discuss this work, which is the subject of her new book, Descendants of Light: American Photographers of Jewish Ancestry.
Wolin photographed each artist and interviewed them about possible connections between Jewish ancestry and the practice of photography. She then re-photographed their heirloom ancestral photographs dating as far back as the mid-1850s.
Wolin’s audiovisual conversation will feature excerpts from her interviews and full-screen photographs. Within these multilayered materials, Wolin gives voice and vision to the photographers’ views on the nature of the photographic medium and its intersection with American Jewish culture.
