To modern audiences, the phrase “nitrate film” has an air of mystery and danger, despite the fact that this film base was used for more than fifty years. To demystify this archival stock, Jared Case, executive director of the Nitrate Picture Show and head of collection information, research, and access in the Moving Image Department, will talk about why nitrate was used, why it’s necessary to conserve nitrate prints, and why it’s important to project these original artifacts.
Over a professional life spanning seven decades, Edward Steichen (1879–1973) established himself as one of the most important figures in the history of photography. What is less known is that for much of that time, Steichen devoted himself to the nurturing of plants and gardens, an activity that sustained him and through which he developed ardently held beliefs regarding the relationship of art, nature, and creativity.
