Get hands-on experience making black-and-white 35mm perforated film stock. This workshop is scheduled so those attending the Nitrate Picture Show over the weekend can extend their visit to learn how to make film. The group will make a gelatin silver bromide emulsion, coat acetate film base, then slit and perforate it. Using a Bell & Howell Eyemo 35mm motion picture camera, participants will shoot this film in the same historic gardens filmed by George Eastman and Thomas Edison nearly a century ago.
We will then chemically process the film, and participants will travel to the museum’s off-site digital preservation lab and watch as the film is digitally scanned and inverted for viewing as a positive motion picture. Participants will take home the negative film clips they make and a video assemblage of all the positive film scenes.
Each participant will receive a manual written by Mark Osterman with all formulas and instructions to make the emulsion used during this workshop.
Audience: Limited to six, this four-day workshop is designed for those who want to gain a strong understanding of the manufacture of motion picture film. No experience necessary. Register soon for this workshop as it will sell out.
Cancellation Policy: Withdrawal from the workshop 30 days before the session start date will receive a refund, minus a $100 processing fee. No refunds will be given for cancellations made less than 30 days before a workshop start date. If the workshop is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class will be fully refunded.
