Workshop for 7 participants
A fun and informative emulsion workshop for beginners! Gelatin emulsion dry plates are the ultimate alternative to factory-made black-and-white film. In this workshop you will learn the basics of how to make the silver bromide emulsion from raw materials and coat your own 4×5″ glass plates. Then you will move outside into the historic gardens of the Eastman Museum to make exposures with a view camera. Finally, you will develop your plates in the museum’s darkroom. Selected plates will be digitally scanned and inverted to allow participants to see their negatives as positive images.
All participants will receive a work apron and a manual written by Mark Osterman and Nick Brandreth on making the emulsion, including formulas.
This workshop includes viewing vintage landscape prints from the museum’s photography collection.
Audience: Limited to 7 participants, this 4-day workshop is suitable for fine art or commercial photographers, educators, and anyone interested in the evolution of photography. No experience necessary.
Cancellation Policy: Withdrawal from the workshop 30 days before the session’s start date will result in a refund minus a $300 processing fee. No refunds will be given for cancellations made fewer than 30 days before the workshop’s start date.
