Workshop for eight participants

Learn to make your own carbon tissues using pigments available at your local art supply store or online.

Unlike silver prints, a carbon print image is formed with the same pigments used for centuries in artists’ oil colors. The key to making carbon prints is a sheet of pigmented gelatin call a “tissue.” These can be purchased, but are expensive and limited to only a handful of colors.

Instructors Mark Osterman and Nick Brandreth will teach an easy way to make carbon tissues from scratch using common materials and easy-to-make equipment. Pariticipants will expose, develop, and transfer the carbon image onto fine art paper.

The group will view rare original examples of early carbon prints from the museum’s collection. Each participant will receive a manual with complete instructions in basic carbon tissue making and printing including reprinted articles from publications in the research library.

Audience: Limited to eight, this three-day workshop is suitable for fine art photographers, curators, students, teachers, and anyone interested in discovering the potential of this process. No experience necessary.

Cancellation Policy: Withdrawal from the workshop 30 days before the session start date will receive a refund, minus a $100 processing fee.
