Digital Negative Making for Alternative & Historic Process Printing

Wednesday, March 2, 2016, 12 a.m., George Eastman Museum

No longer limit yourself to just analog or just digital photography. This hands-on workshop will help you to harness the precision of digital imaging to produce negatives with your inkjet printer for a variety of your favorite historic and alternative printing processes. Historic Process Specialist Nick Brandreth will teach participants easy step-by-step workflow for digital negative making.

This workshop will feature the following techniques:

  • Shooting with your own digital camera
  • Processing and handling your digital files/captures
  • Basic digital photo retouching
  • Building the proper printing curves for various alternative printing processes
  • Making gold-toned salted paper prints from digital negatives

Each participant will receive a salted paper printing manual, basic written instructions for making digital negatives, and a reading list with current literature on digital negative making. The group will also have an opportunity to view original works from the George Eastman Museum collection.

Important: Each participant will be required to bring his or her own digital camera and laptop computer with Adobe Photoshop CS5 or CS6.
