Workshop for 8 participants
Join us as we look into the earliest photographic printing processes dating from 1790 to 1841. We’ll use botanicals from the Eastman Museum gardens as well as lace, feathers, and even historic stained glass window fragments to sun print using several photographic processes invented before 1842.
In this era, the knowledge of how to keep a photographic image from fading was not well understood. Several different techniques were introduced by Thomas Wedgwood, William Henry Fox Talbot, Hippolyte Bayard, Mungo Ponton, and John Hershel. The results were a wide variety of hues from yellow to brown and red to blue. Participants will leave with a night folio of breathtaking samples. The prints participants will make will last for years as long as they are viewed only under average room lighting conditions. Participants will be given a folio to preserve the prints when not viewing.
A manual by Mark Osterman with all the formulas and directions will be provided. This will also include facsimile historic publications regarding many of the processes.
Audience: Limited to eight, this three-day program is for anyone interested in alternative photographic processes and the early history of photography. No experience is needed.
