Learn the process that Alfred Stieglitz heralded as “undoubtedly the most beautiful of the photographic processes.” Carbon prints were introduced in 1855 and remain one of the most fascinating non-silver printing processes. Offering ultra high resolution and an incredible tonal range, carbon prints can be used in a single layer to produce stunning black-and-white photographs or can be used in multiple layers to produce full color prints! This process is also one of the most stable and archival of all photo processes.
Historic Process Specialist Nick Brandreth will show you an easy way to make carbon tissues from scratch using common materials you can find at a local art supply store and easy-to-make equipment. Then, he will demonstrate how to single-transfer the carbon image onto paper and glass.
