Salted Paper Printing

Wednesday, June 5, 2019, 12 a.m., George Eastman Museum

Tuition: $450 ($425 members), plus $60 materials fee
Workshop for 6 participants

You asked for it, and here it is! This stand-alone 3-day workshop in salted paper printing is offered by popular demand. The salt process is the earliest silver-based photographic technique and is used to make photograms, primitive in-camera negatives, and prints from paper and glass negatives.

The salted paper image is printed by light rather than developed with chemicals. You will learn methods that include preparing the paper and making the sun print, variants of traditional toning, and print waxing with lavender oil and beeswax. Negatives will be provided, as negative making is not part of this workshop.

Participants will receive a work apron and manual with all the formulas and instructions. The group will also view rare examples of original salted paper prints made by William Henry Fox Talbot, Hill and Adamson, James Robertson, and others from the George Eastman Museum’s collection.

Audience: Limited to 6 participants, this 3-day workshop is suitable for fine art photographers, educators, and anyone interested in the evolution of photography. No experience necessary.

Cancellation Policy: Withdrawal from the workshop 30 days before the session’s start date will result in a full refund minus a $100 processing fee. No refunds will be given for cancellations made fewer than 30 days before the workshop start date. If the workshop is canceled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire tuition will be fully refunded. The George Eastman Museum is not responsible for airline ticket cancellation costs or fees.

Location and Scheduling: Daily sessions begin at 9 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. The workshop is held at the George Eastman Museum, 900 East Avenue, Rochester, NY. Directions can be found here here.
