Albumen prints were the standard for card-mounted stereographs from the early 1860s through the 1890s. Learn how to print and mount real albumen print stereographs for 3-D viewing in this workshop. Both digital stereo negatives and actual collodion on glass stereo negatives will be used in this workshop. We will coat paper with albumen, sensitize the paper, and print, cut, transpose, and mount the prints. We will also cover the French tissue technique.
Participants will visit the Department of Photography to see vintage examples of mounted albumen print stereographs, albumen on glass stereo-transparencies, collodion on glass stereo-transparencies, and French tissues. Participants will receive a manual written by Mark Osterman with all formulas and instructions to make albumen prints as well as mounting instructions for both stereographs and French tissues.
Audience: Limited to six, this intensive three day workshop is designed for those who want to make albumen print stereographs as used in conventional 19th-century viewers. No experience necessary.
