This five-day, hands-on negative workshop is for the experienced collodion ambrotypist or tintypist who wants to get to the next level. Collodion negatives were used in combination with every photographic printing process invented prior to 1880. These include salt, cyanotype, albumen, developed-out salt, gum, carbon, platinum, palladium, photo ceramic, and more.
Taught by Mark Osterman, participants will learn the theory that sets the collodion negative apart from ambrotypes and tintypes. The rare dry collodion process will also be taught, allowing the photographer to shoot negatives in the field without the need for a darkroom or silver bath on location.
The workshop includes shooting, processing, and developing plates exposed in the historic gardens and grounds at the museum. Participants will also learn the salt printing process and make a positive proof print from their favorite collodion negative.
Each participant will receive a manual with complete instructions and formulas for both the wet and dry collodion negative written by Mark Osterman and facsimile readings on the topic of collodion negative making. Participants will also view original albumen and salt prints by Julia Margaret Cameron, James Robertson, Gustave le Gray, Eadweard Muybridge, and many others from the George Eastman House collection.
Audience: Limited to six, this five-day program is specifically for those who wish to attain a higher level in their collodion technique. Prior experience in basic collodion ambrotypes or tintypes is strongly suggested.
Tuition: $1,200/$1,100 members, plus $200 materials fee.
Cancellation Policy: Withdrawal from the workshop 30 days before the session start date will receive a refund, minus a $100 processing fee. No refunds will be given for cancellations made less than 30 days before a workshop start date. If the workshop is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class will be fully refunded. George Eastman House is not responsible for airline ticket cancellation costs or fees. Eastman House may take and use images, still or video, for educational and promotional purposes.
Location and Scheduling: Daily sessions begin at 9 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. Unless otherwise stated, the workshops are held at George Eastman House in Rochester, New York. Directions can be found here.
Lodging: Lodging is not included in the cost of the workshop. Participants must make their own arrangements. The host hotel for workshops held at George Eastman House is the East Avenue Inn & Suites, eastaveinn.com. This hotel is within walking distance of the museum. Room rates begin at $119 per night.
