Gilda

Saturday, November 12, 2016, 8 p.m., Dryden Theatre

(Charles Vidor, US 1946, 111 min., 35mm)

The Noir Effect. Few classics are as sexy or provocative as this show-stopping combination of hardboiled film noir and over-the-top melodrama. A story of betrayal set against the casino world of Buenos Aires, Gilda assured Rita Hayworth’s place as the screen’s reigning sex goddess and provided Glenn Ford with one of his most intriguing roles. Hayworth’s rendition of “Put the Blame on Mame” will look especially seductive and alluring in this gorgeous 35mm print. Charles Vidor never before and never again made anything even remotely as blistering as Gilda, his single claim to immortality.
