Van Gogh, following an unsuccessful preaching career, finds himself drawn to the people of the town and the work that they do, which leads him to find drawing and, ultimately, painting. He is influenced by his relationships with painters Anton Mauve (Noel Purcell) and Paul Gaugin (Anthony Quinn), but the beautiful images he paints belie a struggle with depression.
