The Money Pit

(Richard Benjamin, US 1986, 91 min., DCP)

Significantly inspired by Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (screening Friday, August 21), this film takes the idea of the rural escape and transplants it to the materialistic 1980s. Walter (Tom Hanks) and Anna (Shelley Long) are forced to move when her ex-husband returns to claim his apartment. Longing for a place to call their own, Walter is encouraged by a million-dollar property that needs to sell quickly—and cheap. While initially attractive, the house reveals itself as soon as they move in. Many repairs are needed and slapstick hilarity follows as the couple deal with dangerous conditions, questionable contractors, and the seeming vagaries of building code.
