Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House

(H. C. Potter, US 1948, 94 min., 35mm)

Jim and Muriel Blandings (Cary Grant and Myrna Loy) and their two daughters are feeling cramped in their New York City apartment. Instead of investing the money in modifications to the apartment, Jim enters into a questionable real estate deal in Connecticut. While the 200-year-old farmhouse may have the charm Jim wants, it doesn’t have the structural integrity it needs, and the family has to invest thousands of dollars to repair it. With an increasing number of setbacks, bills mounting, and increased pressure at his advertising job, Jim is heading for a nervous breakdown. The template for a number of similarly themed comedies, Mr. Blandings is immeasurably aided by Grant and Loy’s brilliant timing.
