[Postponed] In Conversation: Frederick Douglass Institute Panel: Regional History and Resounding Impact

Wednesday, November 15, 2023, 5:30 p.m., Dryden Theatre
This event has been postponed. Please check back with us in the near future for a new event date. We apologize for any inconvenience.

The George Eastman Museum is partnering with the Frederick Douglass Institute of the University of Rochester to highlight the impact of segregation, racism, and violence against Black people in Western New York from the 1950s onward, as well as the community strength and resilience shown in response. Some of these unfortunate developments took place over years and persist today, while others happened in only a few moments, days, or weeks. The examples described were results of long-standing policies and act of segregation fueled by racism, and each profoundly impacted Black life and community in Rochester.

Join us as project partners—Reenah Golden, Jeffrey Q. McCune, Jr., Miranda Mims—talk with three community members about their experiences with racial injustice in Rochester and Western New York. After the program, there will be time for a Q&A and continued discussion with the audience. Conversations will be moderated by: Reenah Golden, founder and executive artistic director, Avenue Blackbox Theatre and adjunct professor, University of Rochester Jeffrey Q. McCune, Jr., PhD, Frederick Douglass professor and chair of Faculty Programs and Departmental Initiatives, Frederick Douglass Institute and Department of Black Studies Miranda Mims, director of rare books, special collections, and preservation, University of Rochester Libraries Discussion. This free program is presenting in conjunction with exhibition Gillian Laub: Southern Rites on display at the Eastman Museum through Dec. 31

Free event; donations appreciated. Registration recommended.
