From Russia With Love

Thursday, April 7, 2016, 8 p.m., Dryden Theatre

(Terence Young, UK/US 1963, 115 min., 35mm)

Though the Bond series would soon evolve into something more like an action franchise than a series of genuine spy thrillers, From Russia with Love represents the purest example of espionage storytelling in the series. 007’s feet are on the ground in Istanbul during the height of the Cold War, and he’s looking to get his hands on a stolen Soviet device that could put the West ahead in the international conflict. It turns out, however, that there is another party involved, one with a plan to play both sides for its own sinister gains. From Russia with Love is usually considered the definitive Bond classic for its twisting plot, sexy romantic interest, exotic locales, and impeccable action.
