Documentary Photography for Teens (Ages 14–17)

The George Eastman Museum and the Flower City Arts Center team up to bring you Documentary Photography for Teens. This week-long workshop will teach students how to use a 35 mm film camera (including f-stops, shutter speeds, ISO, and proper exposure) and how to make their own black-and-white prints in a darkroom. Students will have the unique experience of meeting renowned photographer Eugene Richards for an exclusive tour of his exhibition The Run-On of Time. An online gallery of students' work will be created at the completion of the workshop.

The Nitrate Picture Show Kicks Off on May 5 at the George Eastman Museum

The George Eastman Museum will present the 3rd Nitrate Picture Show on May 5–7, 2017, at the Dryden Theatre in Rochester, NY. The schedule for this year’s festival includes ten programs of feature-length and short films from twelve international archives and collections. The titles in this year’s lineup—which have collectively won five Academy Awards—will be revealed at 9 a.m. on Friday, May 5.

George Eastman Museum to begin restoration of historic mansion’s East Porch in June

At George Eastman’s historic mansion, the restoration of the East Porch—the second stage in a series of critical preservation projects taking place over several years—will begin in June. These projects are addressing historic structures and architectural elements that were not included in the major restoration of the mansion in 1990.

Eugene Richards: The Run-On of Time will open at the George Eastman Museum on June 10

Eugene Richards: The Run-On of Time, an exhibition co-organized by the George Eastman Museum and The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, explores Eugene Richards’s career as a photojournalist and documentary photographer from 1968 to the present. The Run-On of Time is the first museum retrospective devoted to Richards’s work and will open at the George Eastman Museum on June 10. The exhibition will remain on view through October 22.

A History of Photography

This rotation provides an overview of the history of photography through images that include photographers, photographic apparatus, and/or photographic objects. Made by a wide range of photographers, the objects on view begin with John Moffat’s 1865 portrait of William Henry Fox Talbot and culminate in Gillian Wearing’s 2013 work Me As Talbot, a self-portrait that mimics a portrayal of Talbot with his mousetrap camera. Curated by Jamie M. Allen, associate curator of photography, this installation depicts how photographers have referred to the medium, and to themselves, in their image-making.
