MGM production head Irving Thalberg and his then-wife Norma Shearer bring this modern tale of infidelity to the screen. When Jerry (Shearer) discovers that her husband, Ted (Chester Morris) has had an affair, she turns to Ted’s best friend Don (Robert Montgomery) to settle their marital account. When Ted can’t abide this treatment they file for divorce. After numerous relationships, Jerry finally meets her old friend Paul (Conrad Nagel), who has always been attracted to Jerry but now has a wife of his own. Nominated for Best Picture, Director, and Writing, Shearer took home the Academy Award for her performance as the jilted wife.

Licentious and Suggestive: Hollywood Before the Code

The Motion Picture Production Code was adopted by Hollywood studios in 1930. This set of  guidelines attempted to persuade filmmakers toward a more aspirational view of their art, and the effect it had on their audience. Due to the mature content being brought to the screen and the occasionally scandalous behavior by filmmakers and stars off-screen, The Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA), led by Will H. Hays, attempted to reverse the negative press and protests by religious groups laid against the industry in an attempt to save it.
