(Richard Lester, UK 1965, 84 min., 35mm)
In between working with the Beatles on A Hard Day’s Night and Help!, director Richard Lester helmed this adaptation of Ann Jellicoe’s popular British play after Lindsay Anderson turned the job down. Lester infused the film with his manic energy, adding the technique of direct address to the camera, humorous subtitles, quick editing, and a Greek chorus of disapproving members of the “older generation,” creating a major artifact of the Mod era. Shy schoolteacher Colin (Michael Crawford) enlists the help of drummer friend Tolen (Ray Brooks) to educate him in the “knack” of seducing women. When the inexperienced Nancy (Rita Tushingham) moves to London, Tolen’s swaggering attitude clashes with Colin’s charm. The jazzy score by John Barry is the perfect accompaniment to the swinging sixties visuals.
