Tuesday, June 21, 2022, 7:30 p.m., Dryden Theatre

(Clarence Brown, US 1930, 89 min., 35mm)

Chris Christofferson (George F. Marion), the alcoholic skipper of a coal barge in New York, receives a letter from his estranged twenty-year-old daughter, Anna “Christie” Christofferson (Greta Garbo). She shares that she is leaving Minnesota to stay with him despite not having seen him for fifteen years. Anna arrives a dishonored woman with a secret past, having worked at a brothel for two years. One night on the barge, Chris rescues Matt (Charles Bickford) and two other sailors from the sea. After some time on the barge, Anna and Matt fall in love, but she continues to keep her past a secret from both Matt and her father. Anna Christie is Greta Garbo’s first sound film.
