(Stanley Kubrick, US/UK 1999, 159 min., 35mm)

Stanley Kubrick’s final directorial effort was released twelve years after his previous film and four months after his death. Inspired by Arthur Schnitzler’s 1926 Traumnovelle (or Dream Story), Kubrick waited until he had a real-life couple that could commit to his demanding production schedule to make the film. Enter husband and wife Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, who lived in England for the entire eighteen-month shoot. Cruise is Bill Harford, a well-connected physician in New York City, whose wealthy clients have him attending to their needs and emergencies at odd hours. He and his wife, Alice (Kidman), struggle with their relationship and intimacy, revealing hidden desires that sends Bill on a journey through New York City nightlife in search of answers to internal questions. Controversial on its release, the film performed much better outside of the United States and has undergone a reappraisal in recent years, ranking it among Kubrick’s best films.
