(George D. Baker, US 1917, 83 min., 35mm)
Despondent after the disgrace and suicide of her father, Eleanore Marsten (Emily Stevens) leaves her comfortable lifestyle for a position at a department store. There, she meets the wealthy and attractive Powers Fiske (Frank Mills), who promises that he can remove her painful memories with a simple brain operation. Eleanore, desperate to lead a happy life, agrees, but the operation robs her of her personality and she becomes cruel and selfish. Eleanore falls under the spell of Dr. Trow (Mario Majeroni) who unlocks memories of her past lives as his control grows stronger. Powers must find a way to undo the damage he’s done and save Eleanore from herself. This brand-new George Eastman Museum preservation of this wild fantastical tale re-creates the wonderful tinting and toning from the nitrate original.
Live piano accompaniment by Dr. Philip C. Carli.
