The legacy of actor/director/producer Philip Seymour Hoffman is a  point of pride for those in his hometown, who will soon be able to enjoy a memorial erected in  his honor at George Eastman Museum, outdoors near the Dryden Theatre. On Saturday, May 28,  a bronze life-size sculpture will be unveiled that depicts Hoffman appearing to be walking  toward the movie theater.  

The George Eastman Museum will present the 6th Nitrate Picture Show from June 2 to 5, 2022, at the Dryden Theatre in Rochester, NY. The Nitrate Picture Show, the world’s only festival of film conservation, returns after a two-year hiatus for the sixth edition with a new lineup of nitrate prints on screen, the Nitrate Touch workshop, and two concerts on Thursday, June 2: the first on the George Eastman’s grand piano and the second on the Eastman’s Aeolian pipe organ.

The Dryden Theatre at George Eastman House welcomes writer/director Bob Byington, who will introduce his debut feature film Harmony and Me at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, and talk with the audience following the screening. One of the film’s actors, Kevin Corrigan (Grounded for Life, Goodfellas, Pineapple Express), also will appear in person that evening and take part in the discussion.

For the first time in the two centuries of photographic history, a book has been produced that celebrates both the camera and the art of the photograph — displaying images alongside the cameras that created them. George Eastman House International Museum of Photography & Film launches this month Camera: The History of Photography from Daguerreotype to Digital (Sterling Innovation, 2009, 368 pp., $45). The world’s oldest museum of photography, Eastman House is home to a number of world-class collections, including the world’s largest collection of camera technology.

George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film is commemorating its 60th anniversary in 2009 with a deluxe portfolio of 12 photographs created by celebrated international artists. The Garden Vibes summer concert series at George Eastman House, marking its 16th year, boasts a variety of Rochester-based bands with international followings in honor of the city of Rochester’s 175th anniversary. Relive the moment when Harvard Beats Yale 29-29 at the Rochester premiere of this critically acclaimed film at the Dryden Theatre at George Eastman House 8 p.m. Saturday, June 20 and 7 p.m. Sunday, June 21. The Dryden Theatre at George Eastman House showcases recent preservation projects at 8 p.m. Friday, June 19 — including costume and makeup tests from the 1939 classic Gone With the Wind. These tests, being shared with the public for the first time, feature Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, and other stars from the film.

The description “Dutch landscape” may evoke an idyllic vision reminiscent of Dutch landscape paintings, but today the Netherlands is known for its planned, manipulated landscape. In the last two decades a number of Dutch photographers and filmmakers have taken contemporary Dutch landscape and nature as their point of departure. George Eastman House presents a major survey of this new work, titled Nature as Artifice: New Dutch Landscape in Photography and Video Art, on view June 13 through Aug. 16. It is a companion show to the Eastman House summer exhibition New Topographics, originally mounted in 1975, illustrating the profound influence of that exhibition on the generations that have followed.

The yellow brick road leads to the Eastman Theatre and the Eastman House on Sunday, May 3 as the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and George Eastman House team up for a special collaboration celebrating the 70th anniversary of the MGM classic The Wizard of Oz — a film that has given us some of our most unforgettable musical memories and for which Eastman House holds in preservation the original camera negatives.

The landmark exhibition New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-altered Landscape — originally mounted in 1975 at George Eastman House International Museum of Photography & Film — is being recreated for an international tour by the Center for Creative Photography at The University of Arizona and George Eastman House. New Topographics signaled the emergence of a new approach to landscape photography, ultimately giving a name to a movement and style. As evidence of its influence, it is considered the second most-cited photography exhibition in the history of the medium. The New Topographics tour will open at George Eastman House June 13 (on view through Sept. 27, 2009), and then travel to eight venues in the United States and Europe.

The Dryden Theatre at George Eastman House will screen Examined Life (April 11 and 12) andAngry Monk (May 2) as the final installments of the popular “Human Spirit” film series. The “Human Spirit” series launched in September 2008 and has featured films that explore the potential to add meaning in one’s life through contributions to the lives of others.
