The George Eastman Museum begins the celebration of its 75th anniversary with a visual journey back to the 1960s. The museum’s newest exhibition, Crashing into the 60s: Film Posters from the Collection, opens Friday, February 2 in its Main Galleries and Potter Peristyle. This exhibition features film posters from the extensive George Eastman Museum collection. In addition, a film series connecting to and expanding upon many of the posters displayed in the exhibition will run in the Dryden Theatre through the exhibition’s run in September.

The George Eastman Museum has announced the winter/spring lineup for its Wish You Were Here lecture series. For over 20 years, this popular photography lecture series has brought artists and photojournalists to Rochester to share their stories and photographs from around the world. The 2024 series will kick off on Thursday, January 25 at 6 p.m., with photographer Gregory Halpern.

The legacy of actor/director/producer Philip Seymour Hoffman is a  point of pride for those in his hometown, who will soon be able to enjoy a memorial erected in  his honor at George Eastman Museum, outdoors near the Dryden Theatre. On Saturday, May 28,  a bronze life-size sculpture will be unveiled that depicts Hoffman appearing to be walking  toward the movie theater.  

The George Eastman Museum will present the 6th Nitrate Picture Show from June 2 to 5, 2022, at the Dryden Theatre in Rochester, NY. The Nitrate Picture Show, the world’s only festival of film conservation, returns after a two-year hiatus for the sixth edition with a new lineup of nitrate prints on screen, the Nitrate Touch workshop, and two concerts on Thursday, June 2: the first on the George Eastman’s grand piano and the second on the Eastman’s Aeolian pipe organ.

The George Eastman Museum has received a grant award of $20,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for the museum’s preservation of Highlights and Shadows (US 1937), a film by James Sibley Watson Jr. Today, the NEA announced awards totaling more than $27.6 million in its first funding round of fiscal year 2016, including this Art Works award to the Eastman Museum. 

The George Eastman Museum officially announced today that it will be presenting the 2nd Nitrate Picture Show this coming spring. The festival will be held April 29–May 1, 2016 at the Dryden Theatre, the George Eastman Museum’s historic venue for film exhibition in Rochester, NY. The Dryden Theatre—one of only a few archival venues in the world that can project nitrate film—is home to the museum’s ongoing program of past and present cinematic works from all countries.

The George Eastman Museum has recently acquired the world’s largest collection of contemporary Indian cinema held by a museum or film archive. The collection consists of 775 prints representing 597 film titles, all in 35mm format, made between 1999 and 2013. In addition, about 6,000 film posters were acquired as part of the collection. This exceptional donation represents not only films from the Hindi-language film industry commonly known as “Bollywood,” but also Malayalam, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu productions. The languages represented in these films include Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. Many titles are from acclaimed masters of Indian cinema, such as Mani Ratnam, Ashutosh Gowariker, Anurag Kashyap, Nagesh Kukunoor, and Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

George Eastman Museum has always been Rochester’s home for the holidays. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Sweet Creations—the exquisite display of dozens of cleverly designed and deliciously decorated gingerbread houses and objects located throughout museum. As one of the Greater Rochester community’s most beloved holiday traditions, the display will be on view November 7 through December 16. 

The George Eastman Museum will premiere the latest body of work from photographer Brian Ulrich, The Centurion, on October 31. An artist drawn to exploring the visual landscape of America’s consumption economy, Ulrich has spent the last several years photographing sites and people associated with extreme wealth. This exhibition of 23 of his recent photographs will be on view in the museum’s Project Gallery through February 14, 2016.

George Eastman House has announced the appointment of Heather Shannon as Assistant Curator in the Department of Photography. Shannon brings more than a decade of academic and museum experience to her new role at Eastman House, where she will be focusing on 19th century photography. 

George Eastman House recently announced that all Dryden Kids film screenings will now be FREE for attendees 17 years old and younger. In keeping with its mission to promote the art and history of cinema, the Dryden Theatre is encouraging younger audiences to see films on the big screen in their original formats, as they were intended to be.

George Eastman House will host two events on Sunday, September 20 as part of the First Niagara Rochester Fringe Festival. The Company Stores, a folk fusion band from Charleston, West Virginia, will perform at 11 a.m. (tickets $10). Vivien Leigh: The Last Press Conference, a play produced by Screen Plays Theater will be presented at 2 p.m. (tickets $15). Both performances will be held in the Dryden Theatre, 900 East Avenue. Tickets can be ordered in advance at eastmanhouse.org.

George Eastman House has joined Blue Star Museums, a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 2,000 museums across America to offer free admission to the nation’s active duty military personnel, including National Guard and Reserve, and their families. The official Blue Star program runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2015; however, George Eastman House will offer free admission to active military and their families year-round, beginning on Flag Day, Sunday, June 14, 2015.

Acclaimed director Dan Sallitt, will be appearing at the Dryden Theatre at George Eastman House on Friday, June 12, for a Q&A session following the screening of his most recent film, The Unspeakable Act (2012) at 8 p.m. Sallitt will return to the theater on Saturday, June 13, to introduce a film that he has chosen to accompany his feature, A Month in Thailand (Paul Negoescu, 2013).

The fifth annual George Eastman House Photo Finish 5K will take place on Saturday, October 3, 2015. With a great course through Rochester’s Neighborhood of the Arts, the run/walk is open to all—from competitive runners and people using wheelchairs, to casual joggers, dedicated walkers, and entire families.
